Welcome to our blog! We’re a married couple who just really, really like bourbon. Here we’ll take a deeper dive into different bourbons each week; some will be the usual suspects, some will be specially selected bourbon. As we’ve been inspired by the warm welcome of a Kentucky Hug, we want to use this blog as a way to demystify bourbon while having some fun. We’ll taste, sip, and share our thoughts on the flavor notes, viscosity, and value.
What is a Kentucky Hug?
It’s the warm feeling that starts at the back of your tongue, glides down your throat and into your chest as you experience the first sip of bourbon. Depending on the bourbon, it can be a warm gentle hug or it can be a full on bear hug packed with heat and spice. It opens up the palate so that when you’re ready to take the second sip, you can taste and appreciate all of the different flavors of your bourbon (like caramel, vanilla, or cinnamon).
On a recent trip to Kentucky, we were touring the Maker’s Mark Distillery and while on the tour they showed us their private tasting room. It was filled from floor-to-ceiling with different recipes of their Private Select for various restaurants and liquor stores around the world, they called it their bourbon library. Having seen their bourbon library and thinking about our collection of delicious bourbons at home, we couldn’t help but dream of building our own. However, living in a city-sized apartment, we didn’t have the room to build a floor-to-ceiling bourbon library, so we’re starting a virtual one here on our blog.
We’ve explored many delicious bourbons over the last few years, developing our palate along the way. Figuring out which flavors we like or don’t like. We thought that this blog will be a way for us to explore new tastes, share those tasting notes, and our opinions on the various bourbons out there.
